Bring It!

Wednesday, February 01, 2017

I search for the essence of people. You know, that essential, irreducible element that makes us all incredibly unique. It’s there inside of a newborn baby, and it’s there upon the face that wears a hundred years! Essence is there within every human being of every age. Deep on the inside, there is an intrinsic and indispensable quality that only you can bring to this time, and to this place. Bring it!

Tiny Little Bell

Wednesday, April 27, 2016

As I began a telephone consultation with a client, he cautioned me. “I’m home today because my little girl doesn’t feel well. I gave her a ‘tiny little bell’ to ring if she needs me while I’m on the phone.” He assured me, “Don’t worry, you’ll barely hear it.” I thought that was so special! It was beautiful, and I said, “That’s kind of what we do with our loved ones. We give them a figurative ‘tiny little bell’ to hang on their hearts so only we can hear their quiet rings of desire or need”. If we love, then we keep “mental room” for our loved ones, always maintaining a “track of vigilance” for what they’re doing, how they’re feeling, what they need. As we love, we're always tuning an ear for the subtle ringing of that “tiny little bell.” This tuning in is a characteristic of relating that makes all of our loving relationships so unique and ever growing. As for me, I hang “tiny little bells” on the hearts of my loved ones, listening to hear the unspoken desires and needs that only my touch can fulfill. How about you?

Seconds Count

Thursday, April 21, 2016

Think about it. It takes a second to conceive a child, and it takes a second to smile. A heartbeat is likely about a second, as is a breath. It takes about a second to say, “I love you”, and about a second to caress someone’s hand or face. And when all is said and done, it takes about a second to die. The “wisdom literature” tells us that eternity is set in people’s hearts, but for now, I am very aware of the ticking of the clock. Eternity is “big”, but seconds count.

Signal Strength

Thursday, April 14, 2016

Almost everyone has a cell phone and understands “signal strength”. You know, “five bars”, “two bars”, a “half bar”, or “Oooops, my signal faded”. What is your “signal strength” as others are talking with you, or you with them? Truly respectful communications require “five bars”. Perhaps we can get by on “four bars”, but “static” begins to form in the discussion when we drop to “three bars” or less. Expect a conflict if we register “signal faded” when we are sending or receiving an important message. How strong is your “signal strength” as you listen to the loved ones in your life?

My Little Balloon

Thursday, April 07, 2016

I teach kids about a little balloon that they have deep inside of their hearts. It kind of expands to “good things”, and it kind of contracts to “bad things”. I ask them what their “balloon” does when a special friend asks them to play. They always say, “It gets big!” I ask them what happens to their “balloon” when their mom and dad have an argument. They always say, “It shrinks”. Children are so naturally spiritual, and spiritually knowing, until we teach them to think. Thinking is good to solve a problem, but our “heads” should never override “our little balloon”. You see, adults have a “balloon” too! Actually, it’s our spirit, and it has the capacity for knowing things that we cannot possibly know in our heads. As I approach a situation or a person, I simply experience “my little balloon”. If it expands, I move forward; if it contracts, I stop, and sometimes, I pull back. It makes life real simple for me.

#CoreValues

Thursday, March 31, 2016

I love core values. Do you have any? If you don’t, you probably do! Go ahead and study your thoughts, feelings, and actions over the next few days. You’ll come to see what you stand for, and I bet you’ll be pleased. I love teaching about core values, and I think the best instruction is to simply share mine.

“Simplicity” is my first core value. It speaks to the characteristics of honesty, clarity, and a wholehearted commitment to innocent faith. Saying, “Simplicity” out loud feels light, easy, and a little bit playful. I guess that says it all! (And if you want to remember this one just think, “Simple City”. See how that works!)

Excellence” is my second core value. Being committed to my very best in any given moment frees me from artificial standards and judgment. I’m always good enough, and sometimes I'm more! Always remember that you have the freedom to be the very best you that you can be. It’s true!

My third core value is “Transcendence”. For me, transcendence takes me to an actual place where I nurture hopes and dreams that exceed what might seem practical, or even possible! Remember “Simple City”? Yep, that’s where I reside these days, and it's a magical experience! Special things happen here, if you can just believe. I know, that makes me kind of odd, but thanks for noticing!

Charity” is my fourth core value. It’s a state of the heart that always loves others more than it loves self. Think about it, that’s a standard of care that lives and breathes “simplicity”, “excellence”, and “transcendence”. May we always give more than we take!

My last core value is “Serenity”. In its stillness, the truth speaks quietly. I love the Psalm that says, “Be still, and know”. “Know what?” you ask? Don’t worry, if you become still and stay there long enough, you’ll eventually figure it out. By the way, is “sarcasm” a core value?

That’s the course! I sure hope you enjoyed this Simply Encouraging® Experience. If you made it this far, you get a great big smiley sticker on your forehead. :)

Running Late, Doing Great!

Thursday, March 17, 2016

My wife just might be one of the most positive people in the whole, wide world. She just rushed into my office to announce, “I’m running late, but I’m doing great!” How is THAT for evidence that life’s challenges do not have to make us miserable? Come to think of it, her outlook is likely what enables her to be so consistently happy with me!

In The Palm Of Your Hands

Thursday, March 10, 2016

Have you ever held a life in your hands? I suppose all kinds of things are going through your mind right now. Sure, a newborn child counts. Dying “brothers in arms” count too. Life beginning, life ending, but what about YOUR life? Do you realize that you hold your very own life in the palm of your hands? That counts, a lot! And with every person you meet, in some way, shape, or form; you hold their life in your hands as well. Be tender, be careful, be compassionate, and be intentional with your love. Hold all life this way, always, mindfully certain that you’re leaving it with your special touch of "Life, healing, and light™".

Safe People

Thursday, March 03, 2016

We all need safe people around us. Safe people are self-aware. They immediately note their impact upon others, and they desire only to be a positive influence in the world. They always seek truth, so their spirit is open and graceful. Their relationships reflect a natural "mutuality", so if something bothers you, it will be their concern. They truly believe that “I am yours, and you are mine” but emphasize more of the “you” and less of the “me”. Safe people see your potential, and they celebrate. They see your hurt, and they nurture those tender places. Safe people see your dark side, and they love you into the light. They seek to “know” and to “be known”, and intimacy comes easy for them. Safe people have a natural sequence of experience that is always looking upward, inward, and only then, outward. This makes them guided more by their heart than by their psyche. It’s natural to seek safe people, but our striving should be in the direction of becoming that way! It’s challenging, but very rewarding work.

True Love Is Curious

Thursday, February 25, 2016

On the surface, it may appear that everyone seems happy, connected, and free of care. After all, we’re all trained to wear “the mask”. Yet, in the midst of it all, there are so many people who are suffering quietly. Oh, they go through the motions, complete with smiles and the just right words, but look very closely. There is a slight turning away when loved ones are mentioned, as they privately remember a loss. There is that subtle “glazing of gaze” when our latest purchase is mentioned, because they feel shame over a hurting financial condition. Every now and then there will be a slight tear shed for a broken relationship, quickly whisked away so as not to be a burden. So many people are suffering so deeply, deep within their souls. Please take time to notice, dare to give it voice, and care enough to lend a hand. Believe me, your joy will be deeper and more complete if you do. Remember, true love is curious, and cares to the point of action.
