Lessons from a Coconut

Sunday, August 17, 2014

People have to earn our respect, right? Personally, I don’t buy that chant. If I do, it will stunt my growth. I think of respect as a trait that I have to develop towards others, no matter what they bring. I think of it as an aspect of growing in my capacity to love. It’s not about how they treat me; it’s about how I treat them. I think of respect as an outlook that seeks what is special in people, regardless of the package they come in. It treats every individual as a dignitary bearing a priceless lesson for our hearts to grow. Respect sounds so serious, but it’s really a childlike, magical way of seeing every person. Sure, some come wrapped prettier than others, but don’t be deceived! An ugly, hard coconut contains some very sweet stuff if we seek it with expectant curiosity. It’s always amazing what can be found deep within another if we search them with the right heart.

Treat Me Like a Rat!

Saturday, August 09, 2014

When experimental psychologists train rats in a “Skinner Box” (designed to give a variety of stimuli, and a feeding tube to deliver reinforcement) they don’t wait for a full-blown sequence of behavior in order to reward the rat. They reinforce every small step in the direction of the ultimate outcome! We call this “reinforcing successive approximations to the desired behavior”. My point? I think we would be wise to treat each other like rats! I think it’s simply encouraging to hear someone say, “Hey, I notice you’re trying; keep up the great work!” Don’t wait for the full-blown behavior to be satisfied. Train yourselves to see the small steps (no matter how imperfect) that people are taking to become better people, and then hit the figurative “feeding tube”. It will train you to look for the positive in others, and it will make you a person of positive influence in the world around you. As for me, please, treat me like a rat, and consider treating yourself like one as well.

Is This Beneficial?

Sunday, July 06, 2014

At some level, we all wrestle with decision-points and competing values. Is it good or bad? Right or wrong? Healthy, or not so much? It's fine to be informed by outside frames of reference, but sometimes, this is where the confusion begins! And sometimes, the more we seek moral answers on the outside, the more confused we become. Black-and-white questions tend to work from the outer to the inner, creating a haze, and then to solve the angst, we make laws. We make laws for ourselves, we make laws for others, and it's rarely pretty. I don't believe legalism is the best guide for successful living, but grace is! Grace doesn't ask questions impossible to answer. Grace makes a simple inquiry of the voice deep on the inside, and the question is, "Is this beneficial for all concerned?" Whether we submit to it or not, there will always be a wise answer, and it will always cause our spirit to expand or contract towards the step before us. "Is this beneficial for all concerned?" I love that question! It’s so gracefully guiding. Remember, there's a deeper voice that's loving and encouraging. Listen!

Hearing Rules!

Sunday, February 23, 2014

"Thomas listens, and he hears too!" That is a cherished accolade from a wise professor many years ago. So, what does it mean to really hear someone? It means being in their midst; understanding. This means standing "as if" you’re in their shoes without losing the "as if" quality. It means setting yourself aside so you have room to absorb their thoughts, and the feelings that go with them. Hearing means you are listening with openness to the possibility of being transformed at the level of your heart. Do you want to know if you're listening or hearing? Well, then here’s the test. If you're just listening, you will be quick with your opinion, argument, or defense when (or before) the other stops speaking. This is selfish division. If you're hearing, then quiet awe will prevail when their words stop, and at least for a moment, it seems only one person is in the room. This is transcendent connection. Listening is good, but hearing rules!

This Good!

Wednesday, February 19, 2014

Describing how things were “rolling” for me these days, I stopped and said, “Life shouldn’t be this good!” I immediately recognized that statement as a manifestation of how I experience almost everything, “Upside down and backwards.” If you want to see what I mean, go ahead and Google, “Life shouldn’t be…” and you’ll get, “… this hard.” You won’t see, “Life shouldn’t be… this easy,” or “Life shouldn’t be… this good,” but “Life shouldn’t be…this hard.” If you question why THAT should be our cultural chant, then you can begin to see why I like “Upside down and backwards”. The point is, we’re not nearly as prone to say in the good times, “Life shouldn’t be this good or easy” as we are to say, “Life shouldn’t be this bad or hard” in times of challenge. “Life shouldn’t be this good” says so much for me. It says I have much more than I need. It says I feel incredibly blessed. It says I am deeply grateful. And it says that this is going to be my mantra whether things are going my way or not. Yes, read it again... whether things are going my way or not, and I mean it. “Life shouldn’t be this good!” Take it out for a test run, say it with the right spirit, and see how it feels. I think you're going to like it!

To the Right of the "Dash"

Friday, November 22, 2013

You may have heard it said, “It’s all about the ‘dash’”. You know, that short, straight-line symbol between the date of birth, and the date of death, on a gravestone. It seems that it may indeed be all about the “dash”, but personally, I wonder. What about that infinite space to right of the day and year that we officially leave this planet? What we truly believe happens on the right-hand side of that date can determine how we live, the meaning of our existence, our contributions to the “dash”, and so much more. What we believe happens in that never ending space to the right of that date, to the right of the “dash”, can make all the difference in the world.

The Face in the Clouds

Friday, September 27, 2013

When we know what we’re looking for, we’re more likely to see it. Here’s an example of what I mean. Have you ever been gazing up at the clouds with a friend, and when they point and say, “Look, there’s a face!” you instantly see what you didn’t notice a moment before? Well, Simple Encouragement is just like that! It's a "map" that points to the essence of people.

Simple Encouragement is a template that helps us to notice three essential things in others that we might otherwise miss, kind of like the face in the clouds. Engaging one another in three key areas is the essence of relevant relating, and all you have to do is remember, “Life, healing, and light™.” So, what is Simple Encouragement?

Simple Encouragement is a three-pronged way of relating that invites us to be on the lookout for three things in people: (1) their hidden gifts that they have yet to acknowledge (Life), (2) their buried hurts crying out for expression (Healing), and (3) pockets of hiding or shame begging for release (Light). Simple Encouragement is speaking life to potential, healing to pain, and light to darkness, and when we know what we’re looking for, it’s easy to find.

Deep inside, people will always require a word that ignites, a touch that heals, and affirmation that frees them. To be whole, people need others giving voice to hidden gifts that they have yet to acknowledge, whispering to buried hurts crying out for expression, and offering acceptance to pockets of darkness begging for release, all so that higher selves can emerge.

Simple Encouragement is a template for engaging others in increasingly relevant ways. It’s a trilogy of relating that completes us, and through exploring its many undiscovered facets, we call all become creators, healers, and light-bearers in the lives of one other.

Stay the Course!

Friday, September 20, 2013

Life will always have its ups and downs, and everything in between. The best or the worst can hit us in a moment, and through it all, we need a “straight line” to keep us steady. Every step of the way, we need someone, or something, that keeps us on point.  Whatever you’re going through right now, whether it’s the best or the worst, find your “go to” point of reference, cling tight, and stay the course!

Resilient Winner!

Friday, August 30, 2013

Facing a tough challenge in the morning, she asked, “How are you going to deal with it?” My answer took us both by surprise as I matter-of-factly said, “I’ll get up, I’ll step into it, I’ll step through it, and I’m going to be just fine.” It was empowering to hear myself say THAT as I faced the "mountain" before me. It was rewarding to hear "on the outside" the boldness, the confidence, and the faith that I had cultivated "on the inside" for a very long time. In the end, I will be just fine, and in the end, so will you! I mean; are there any challenges that you have ever faced over which you didn’t ultimately prevail, or turn out better for? I didn’t think so. Whatever the "mountain" before you, get up boldly, step into it with confidence, step through it by faith, and be the resilient winner that you are!

Right Behind the Ears!

Thursday, August 15, 2013

I scratched our cat right behind the ears and said, “You have such an incredible life, and you don’t even know you’re living it”. It was truly an “OMG” moment as I immediately sensed a Heavenly Voice saying the exact same thing to me! In an instant, I became mindful of the incredible blessings that I too am living, often without complete awareness, or full appreciation. How about you? Do you need a little scratch behind your ears? Wake up, dig in, and savor every single morsel of this delicious life before you.
