Sweet & Sour

Wednesday, July 08, 2015

“Summertime, and the livin’ is easy…” At least that's what the lyrics say. But tell me, how’s your summer unfolding? If “the livin’ is easy” for you, then perfect! But if you’re like most people, then life is challenging at a time when the weather is hot, and the kids are out of school. I mean, for many, THAT is the challenge! As for me, the flavor of my life is consistently “Sweet & Sour”. You know, kind of like Chinese food. At any given point, I can tell you the blessings AND the curses. The stock market looks like it has rapidly cycling mood swings, and the Supreme Court does too! Relax; it looks that way to liberals and conservatives, depending on the issue. Earthquakes and plagues and wars and heads rolling around, literally, can be a bit unnerving. It's good to be aware of it all, but please join me in my simple little place. I know it’s a registered trademark, but come on, life is good, and sometimes, life is good, even when it’s not. If your life is like mine, then you’ve probably noticed what I notice. The “sour” provides a powerful contrast for more appreciation of the “sweet”. I think that’s how it’s supposed to be. It’s not wrong to acknowledge and speak of the sour life. We’re supposed to! It makes us closer. But let it serve its purpose, and its purpose is to make us more sensitive to the finer nuances of the sweet life. Life is good and life is sweet, even when it doesn’t seem to be. Try to remember that.

The Beginning of Miraculous

Saturday, August 30, 2014

Have you ever worked so hard to “get it right”, only to have it turn out all wrong? Have you ever set out upon the right path, only to arrive in the worst possible place? Have you ever laid out your very best plan, only to wake up to a colossal mess? Yeah, me too; but please don’t despair. Give your seemingly bad outcomes some time, and you just might be surprised! When we let go, what turned out wrong somehow becomes just right, the worst possible places yield rich experiences, and our messes morph into crystal clear delights. Miracles don’t need our striving to happen, and consider this. Sometimes they won’t reveal themselves until we get out of the way! Life is a delicate collaboration with the unseen, and it’s up to us to figure out where we leave off, and start looking for the beginning of miraculous.

Please Judge Me

Saturday, August 10, 2013

It’s incorrect to judge, right? Wrong! We have intellect, conscience, and a heart. For me, that’s evidence that we are supposed to make judgments all day long. We don’t condemn. We don’t form prejudice. We don’t hurt people. We judge to love people! We have intellect, conscience, and heart to apply to ourselves, and to our relationships, for the good of all concerned. We imply love when we say, “Look, what you’re doing is wrong. I want you to stop”. Parents do it for kids. And when they grow up, kids should do it for their parents. We should all do it for each other. To judge creates a boundary, and the last I checked, boundaries are a good thing because they support deeper knowing and intimacy. And by the way, when we say, “Great job”, we have indeed made a judgment. Please judge me. If you don’t, I’ll come to believe you don’t care.

Love Stays

Saturday, June 01, 2013

"In love” feels better than “love” so that’s why it’s easier to do. “In love” is easy since it requires little of us, except to feel good. “Love” on the other hand can be challenging because it asks us to get over ourselves. Since "in love” demands little from us, it feels good to make “forever” promises when we’re “there”, but to “love” when “in love” leaves is the ultimate test of who and what we really are. We all have defects in our capacity to love, so when “in love” leaves, we can leave with it, or we can stay, and face the "growing pains" of maturing as lovers. Learning to love is difficult, but here’s the good news! If we’re determined to grow in “love” when “in love” leaves, eventually, “in love” returns, deeper and sweeter than ever before. This is because love is a lot like nature, complete with distinct seasons, although they’re not quite as predictable. Ours is learning to accept, respect, and enjoy the flow, and here is an encouragement to help you along the way. In loving relationships, as with nature, the sun always shines again, the ice begins to melt, and “in love” returns as new life, more beautiful than ever before. If we nurture that hope, it will help us to “stay the course” during the darker seasons. Remember, real “love” stays when “in love” leaves.

A Very Good Day!

Thursday, March 14, 2013

If we receive praise, it's a good day. If we receive criticism, then it's a better day! Think of it this way. We get to refine ourselves through feedback, and when it comes to criticism, sometimes what feels like a bad day can really be a good day, although we may not know it until much later. If uncomfortable mirrors are being held up for you to look into today, don't wait until tomorrow to realize that this isn't necessarily a bad day after all. Get busy putting what you're learning about yourself into action, and make it a very good day, right now!

Be Graceful!

Sunday, January 27, 2013

As a professional confidante, everybody lies to me. I know THAT got your attention, but they do! Everybody lies to me about something, that is, until they’re ready not to. And the fact is, I have a lot to do with how long that process takes. Here’s how it works. Shame hides, and grace invites it into the light. Grace says, “I won’t judge you”, and it says, “I will respect you, no matter what”. At times, grace is hard to give, and sometimes, grace is harder to receive. This is because we all judge, and we all have shame. We all tend to point the finger of judgment, and we all have those “dark corners” of our lives that we would rather keep hidden with deception and lies. Perhaps the realization of this fact, felt deeply, is what produces grace-filled love in the first place! Wouldn’t it be wonderful if we never had to hide in shame, or feel its crippling effects? Wouldn’t it be liberating to live life not having to deceive ourselves, and each other? Be radically honest with yourself, and then with your finger pointed in the right direction, it will be easy to be a grace-giver! When we’re free of our shadows, then we’re free to help others to be free of theirs. The light of grace carries such tremendous power that if love makes the world go ‘round, then grace keeps it on its axis. Be graceful! People will love you for it.

Simple Encouragement 2013

Friday, December 28, 2012

Our world is desperate for the high road of encouragement. The world is aching for Simple Encouragement®, the essence of “Life, healing and light™”. For me, there is no better thing to do than put words to paper that inspire people to make 2013 a year that embraces all of humanity in peace, with deep, sacred connection.

Encouragement is cultivating people from all of your heart, to all of their being.

As a worldview, encouragement is an attitude of loving engagement, and what does this loving engagement reveal? Engaging others with an attitude of love, we are likely to experience hidden potential that the other can barely see, much less express. We may discover buried hurt begging for expression, and longing for the comfort of another. We might see a pocket of subtle shame, hiding, desiring a touch of understanding acceptance to free it. An attitude of loving engagement can speak “Life to potential, healing to pain, and light to darkness™” in a way that frees souls! This is the heart of Simple Encouragement®, and it will always cause the very best to rise in people.

It’s amazing what can be found deep within another when we search them with the right heart.

We can take one others for granted, you know, until that certain tragedy comes along. At those times, times of loss, we wish we had taken the time to really know that special being more deeply. When we search others with a heart that is free of pride, longing to give, and truly seeking to know, then we find the very best within them. Don’t be fooled by surface appearances, and remember, true love is curious, and cares to the point of action.

Help those around you to be bright! After all, they are your reflection.

I know; this is a hard one to “own”, but it’s true! Save for some unique situations, the look upon the faces of others tends to reflect the heart that is within us. Ponder that thought a bit, and it will certainly create the spiritual equivalent of “Happy Hour”! And when all is said and done, here’s the deal. Love is the flame. Encouragement is the spark. Feel the warmth!

Thanksgiving is a grateful state of mind, celebrated in heartbeats. Moment by moment, I am grateful for you!

Well, it’s true, and I thought it would be the ideal quote as I begin to close this article. I am so grateful to be able to connect with so many, helping you all to shine with “Life, healing and light”™ right there in your special corner of the world. You have a crucial mission to fulfill, so please, give someone the blessing of a “deeper you”. They deserve it, and you do too!

Aim high, hope deeply; expect miracles! I’m wishing you all a Simply Encouraging® New Year, and a blessed 2013!

Be Light!

Sunday, November 11, 2012

“If our hearts are in the right place, we provide a soft light by which others can examine themselves without fear.”

This is the third facet in the trilogy of Simple Encouragement® ~ “Light to darkness”. People have a conscience, and they examine it on the inside to the degree that they feel loved and accepted on the outside. Let’s not distract people with our judgments. Let's offer loving grace, and then marvel at how they grow in the “soil” of our caring.

Simple Encouragement® is, “Speaking life to potential, healing to pain, and light to darkness™”. It’s "A Quiet Cause” full of “Life, Healing, and Light!™” Feel free to “surf” around these pages, and I trust that you will enjoy the experience.

I believe that encouragement is cultivating people from all of our heart, to all of their being, so I hope these writings will stimulate and encourage your highest calling.

And remember, if you want to "delight", then "be light"!

Redo

Wednesday, October 24, 2012

As each day begins, remember, you are in someone’s head, and you are in someone’s heart. Isn’t that awesome! Someone, somewhere is thinking and feeling something about youSo, how do you think you’re “showing up” for those folks as they remember your last interaction with them? Is it with love and light and all good things, or not so much?

I know, sometimes we leave a little trash upon the path of our lives, but it’s all right. We’re all human, so, “We get to mess up, we get to clean up, and we get to keep moving”. And remember, we all receive the graceful offer of a “redo” that comes with each new sunrise. So, consider this question as you start your journey this morning.

Of those you meet today, how will you “show up” in their heads and hearts tomorrow?

Please stop long enough to give that question a mindfully profound answer. Our legacy is simply the stacking up of our day-by-day decisions about how we want to show up tomorrow in the heads and hearts of those we touch todayMay we all be creating Simply Encouraging® Legacies full of “Life, healing, and light™”

And Now?

Saturday, August 25, 2012

Many of our “stories” are unhealthy, having the same old beginning, the same old middle, and the same old end, leaving us with dull, murky pain. A healthy story, by nature, has the same old beginning, the same old middle, but if we give it a brand new end, we move towards healing and freedom! Find new endings to whatever painful stories you might have by asking, "And now?” and then rewrite the closing narrative to the tune of “empowering”. Finish victoriously! Here are some examples to consider. “And now… I’m letting go, finding wholeness, and anticipating the love of my life!” “And now… I’m picking myself up and doing whatever it takes to land the job of my dreams!” “And now... I’m making that lifestyle change that will give me the health and fitness I deserve!” “And now... I’m bringing that shameful habit into the light and choosing a new moral compass!” Folks, it’s never over until it’s over, and the way to keep moving is to give your painful life stories endings that are full of “Life, healing, and light™”. Remember, victory is yours because a “new ending” is always a new beginning. If you’re reading this and you’re stuck, then perhaps it’s your day to get back in the game. And now?
